The transition between office and site work is critical for us, and the platform bridges that gap perfectly. We frequently use Explorer on iPads during site walkovers; having dynamic access to the data layers while standing in the field provides context that you can’t get from paper sources alone, and means that we don’t have to bring so many sheets of paper with us too! On top of that, the desktop tools – specifically the ability to measure distances from features – gives us a greater accuracy and the ability to cross-relate things on site much easier. The Explorer system is really helping us to streamline how we interpret the data for our clients and unlock more value from our Phase 1 Desk Studies.
The challenge:
As an environmental consultant, the ability to instantly view assessments, environmental, geological and mapping data is essential. The functionality of switching between the desktop version and on-site is crucial. I need to access information on-the-go; so I can switch between desktop, mobile or even tablet. I’ve found the traditional paper plans and static data can slow down the process and my workflow, particularly during on-site visits. So by using Groundsure Explorer, it’s improved the way we work as a whole team.
The solution:
By using Explorer, the team is able to work smoothly and efficiently, particularly when on-site and during site walkovers. We can instantly access information via the iPad, allowing us to view multiple data layers, compare time periods and overlay maps.
Explorer enables us to extract key information using the click-to-copy feature, or export the entire table as a CSV file – great for plotting and sharing borehole locations.
The team uses the ‘find me’ feature when on-site – which enables the user to locate their position on the map and see what’s around you. It’s also a valuable tool in planning our pre-site investigations!
When working on projects in the office, Explorer’s desktop features and tools have meant we’ve been able to collaborate more effectively, thanks to the shared access functionality. After a site appraisal has been completed, I am able to invite colleagues to review and explore the insights that were identified.
The outcome:
I’ve found Explorer to be a valuable tool for desktop-based studies, it supports the pre-planning stage for site visits and also the on-site investigations. It’s helped our team to get greater value from the Phase 1 Desktop Studies phase, gather clearer on-site information, it’s also improved our team collaboration, and we’ve been able to deliver more informed insights to our clients.
