Cornwall’s hidden treasure
We are delighted to hear of the positive outlook for reserves of metalliferous bearing mineral veins as discovered during this latest exploration phase by Cornish Metals in and around the area of St Day in west Cornwall.
In the early days of Mining Searches UK, in the late 1970s to early 1980s we carried out extensive mining site investigation for a proposed industrial park in the St Day area. This included a comprehensive mining archive desk study risk assessment. What we had discovered was that there was widespread evidence to confirm the presence of hitherto unrecorded ancient workings in the form of shafts pits and tunnels discovered from surface. As a result of this we were able to chart the course of a large number of mineralised vein or lode outcrops as well as the workings associated with them. Once again proof that this part of the complex mineralised zone of Cornwall was heavily mined prior to records being officially recorded.

The discovery of rich metalliferous veins in the local area which appear to be intact is great news and we look forward to what happens next following this exploration phase. Of course this could mean significant investment into Cornwall and the creation of new skilled jobs on top of a mining revival. From the perspective of mining risk to property, modern mining is much safer and cleaner than previous phases of mining and would be managed under stringent regulation mitigating the potential for issues to arise.
This is a huge step forward for Cornwall’s mining heritage and we are excited to hear more about the advancements in lithium extraction as well as the possibility of opening other metalliferous mines, such as South Crofty, in the former mining capital of the world.
