Pave Paradise and put up a parking lot? WAF 2016

Groundsure recently attended the World Architecture Festival in Berlin, a completely unique event that enables architects from all over the world to come together over three days and pit their best projects against others, with the aim of being declared the World Building of the Year.

This year two UK schemes won their categories and made it to the Final day of presentations;  Lynch Architects for their Zig Zag Building in the office category and Zaha Hadid Architects for their Investcorp Building for Oxford University’s Middle East Centre in the Higher Education & Research category. Both fabulous projects on UK schemes which were recognised from a shortlist of over 350. A total of 42 UK projects made the shortlist.

In the final they were both pipped to the post for the overall World Building of the Year prize by Polish architects Robert Konieczny, KWK Promes for their National Museum project in Szczecin, Poland in the culture category.

It’s not all project presentations at WAF though, the 2,500 delegates are also treated to keynote presentations from world renowned architects, this year including Patrick Schumacher from Zaha Hadid Architects. Given the theme this year was ‘Housing for Everyone’, Patrick Schumacher surprised the majority with his ‘anti-social’ housing (get it?) with ideas such as building over Hyde Park, privatising roads and public space, and abolishing social and affordable Housing.

You can still watch Schumacher’s keynote which was filmed by the architectural magazine Dezeen and read the many articles and comments generated as a result.

One thing is for sure as a result of this years WAF, Joni Mitchell would not be pleased but Schumacher has definitely challenged the Status Quo!
